Do you think the military should raise the age of joining our military for the desk jobs as well as field?

I have known and seen many men and women with experience with just common sense over the age of 36. They were in their 50’s and they were far more skilled with intelligence and quicker from experience in the other jobs set for techinical and communications and in the field than a 36 year old. This is not to say that the younger is not as capable, but I think the combination of the two would be a lot healthier and safer for our youth.
Stress is better handled on the shoulders of the more mature, and why pile it all on the young like we did in Viet Nam? We won WWII because everyone was involved. And Older men are not worried and preoccupied with their newborn baby being born and his wife etc., and that is hard when you are young. The older like Patton is like a stern Father figure, and everyone young can relate to that, it gives a good solid secure feeling, because the old farts in Congress are not out there actively covering your butts, and that is the point, feeling secure.

Dead on straight, put the experienced in there, even as “advisors”, let the physical/dexterity/vision of the young and able do teh legwork, but the knowledge, diplomacy and raw instinct of veterans should not be discounted, it is not a “new world”, every major conflict has had it’s insurgents and guerilla warfare on both sides. Anyone who thinks Germany settled down the day victory was declared is nuts, or that Japanese civilians, not just miltary was ordered to make suicidal attacks or commit suicide. Be it Jeb Stuart’s or Quantrill’s raids or Merle’s Maruaders, the Desert Rats, (SAS), Roger’s Rangers or the French Resistance, we have used these tactics, and then there is the whole history of conflicts with and against the Native American’s that taught the Continental army how to fight the British. In all these cases, you will find there were older men who would now be considered to old to sit behind a desk either involved in leading them in the field or directing them from headquarters. The only advantage to rotating new personnel through is that you then have a larger pool of trained people in event of a major conflict, but one person with 20 plus years of experience should have the option of reserve duty as long as they can meet the minimal physical/health standard. It’s like an ex-spook and Marine said to me after 9/11, he’d gladly take any position he could take in the offensive, if it was a one way ticket with a satchel full of grenades and a sack of ammo clips to drop down Bin Laden’s chimmney, he can’t run anymore, but has no intention of retreat, just advancing, because the grimrepear and old age are stalking him anyways, he’d rather go out in a way that meant something. The older you get, your philosophy of life changes everytimne you read about a classmate stricken down by accident, heart attack, cancer, suicide, or racked with drug addiction, etc. and then you read about an 18 yr. old, who may have been in perfect health with a great future at home being killed by an IED while driving a truck and you think to yourself “What a waste!”, I could have been driving that, but it’s not what fate intends I guess. Those who are involved in combat, and leave the military, are haunted by the fact that it was probably the most important, meaningful thing they have done in their life, that in the history of the human race, the most noble cause worthy of remembrance is freedom, and every one of them is a hero, whether they die in combat or years down the road as an old veteran, many of whom feel abandonned and forgotten by those benefitting from their sacrifices.
